Heart Art Project - 2004 to 2007 - Big Lottery Funded
The Aros Tha Seo Math Dhuibh - Good For You Project Summer 2017
Over the summer holidays, photographers Cailean Maclean, Iain Smith and artist Kate McMorrine worked with some of our young carers. Three groups of young carers and support staff went on outings in Skye with the artists, visiting Braes, Ord, and Harlosh. They heard stories about the places and spent time taking photographs. Afterwards they took part in workshops in photo editing and art. Their work, inspired by their experience, was then exhibited at the Aros Centre and An Crubh.
Grant MacKay, Assistant Manager of Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers said “There were 27 young carers who benefited from the project and they all felt included, happy and relaxed while learning new skills in photography and art. Staff and volunteers were extremely pleased with the project with the bonus of being able to see the young carers being themselves, interacting with their peers, enjoying the various activities and picking up some photo editing tips.”
Photographer Iain Smith said “I personally found being involved in this project a great insight to the talent that we have in the Young Carer community, it was a privilege to be able to help them develop their ideas and hope as many people as possible get an opportunity to view their work. It was also a great chance to share ideas with the other artists, and the walks were great! Bha seo math dhòmhsa cuideachd!”
We were delighted to take some of our primary school age young carers along to Aros for the launch of the photography & art exhibition. Each of the young carers that took part in the project received a copy of their own print to keep. Using a selection of prints chosen by the young carers, we produced a beautiful 2018 calendar which was sold to raise funds for the service and each young carer family received a copy.
